Crowd favorites James Blake and Mardy Fish prevailed in the Match Tie-break Friday at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship to earn a semifinal date with fellow Americans and No. 1 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan.
Blake double-faulted to give Justin Gimelstob and Stephen Huss the second set and set up the decisive Tie-break, where the Americans once again found themselves playing catch up.
Gimelstob and Huss, the No. 3 seeds, secured double match point at 9-7 before the Americans won the next three games to clinch the match 7-6(5), 7-5, 11-9 (Match TB).
In Friday's other quarterfinal match, Chris Haggard and Ivo Karlovic defeated Goran Dragicevic and Dmitry Tursunov 7-5, 7-5.
The 5'10" South African and 6'10" Croat failed to take the second-set lead with the score knotted at 4-4 as Dragicevic and Tursunov successfully climbed out of a 0-40 hole. In their opponent's next service game, Haggard and Karlovic won the "sudden death" point at deuce before proceeding to close out the match on serve.
Haggard and Karlovic will come up against second seeds Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry in Saturday's semifinal. Haggard and Aspelin partnered together earlier this year to reach the Adelaide semifinals.
In the first women's semifinal on Friday, top seeds Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur turned in a perfect second set to defeat Tetiana Luzhanska and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 6-0.
The American-Aussie tandem will face Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki in Saturday's final. The 16-year-old Belarusian and 15-year-old Dane came back to defeat fourth-seeded Americans Carly Gullickson and Ashley Harkleroad 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
