Swede Sofia Arvidsson capped off a memorable week in Memphis, picking up her first career title as she defeated Pole Marta Domachowska in the Cellular South Cup final.
Arvidsson, who picked up her 200th career singles match win when she bested seventh seed Amy Frazier in straight sets Friday, found herself in a tight battle with another young player looking for her first WTA Tour title.
The 22-year-old Swede jumped out to an early advantage in Saturday's final, going two for two on break chances in the first set. Domachowska quickly changed the tide in the next set to level the tie, but faltered in her first service game of the third set.
The Pole succeeded in saving three match points as she served to stay in the match, but Arvidsson finally closed out the victory, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
The Swede had previously appeared in one WTA Tour final, a match she lost to Frazier in Quebec City last November.
In addition to her wins over Domachowska and Frazier, Arvidsson defeated two-time champion Lisa Raymond, Americans Alexandra Stevenson and 15-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki en route to the title.
Arvidsson, who is the top Swedish player at No. 47 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Rankings, improved her season record to 10-3 following Saturday's victory.
The 20-year-old Domachowska, ranked just four places behind Arvidsson, turned in her best performance of the 2006 season in her Memphis debut. In her four previous tournament appearances this year, she bowed out in the first or second round of play.
Domachowska also came up just short in her two previous final appearances. She fell to Maria Sharapova in the 2004 Seoul final and Anabel Medina Garrigues in the 2005 Strasbourg final.
