German Tommy Haas and Swede Robin Soderling booked their spots in Sunday's final as each converted on their fourth match points to respectively defeat qualifier Julien Benneteau and Kristof Vliegen on Saturday at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.
Haas and Soderling have met once previously, in the third round of the 2004 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati, where Haas prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Haas turned in a quick day on Center Court, denying the Frenchman a single break chance in the 54-minute contest to win 6-3, 6-1. The former World No. 2 held Benneteau to just six receiving points won, backed by a 93 percent first-serve success rate.
The sixth seed improved his Memphis record to 19-6 win the semifinal victory, but holds a 1-3 record in the final - most recently falling to Mark Philippoussis last year.
Haas will be appearing in his second straight ATP final following his title-winning performance in Delray Beach to begin the month. Thus far in 2006, his only two recorded losses have come to World No. 1 Roger Federer.
Benneteau, ranked No. 122 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, was playing in just his second ATP-level tournament of the year. He also qualified into the Australian Open, reaching the third round where he fell to Andy Roddick.
In Soderling's tightly-contested semifinal meeting, the Swede held three match points at 5-4 in the third, but the 23-year-old Vliegen pulled through to push the match to a decisive third-set tie-break - the fifth in Memphis this week.
The Swede jumped out to an early lead in the decider, before Vliegen knotted the tie-break back at 4-4. It took a backhand past an approaching Vliegen for Soderling to earn his fourth match point, and a long return from the Belgian for Soderling to clinch the 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5) win.
"It's just a great feeling," said Soderling. "I think we both played amazing tennis. He came up with some great shots on my match points, and all the important points he played really well. I'm really happy to get through this one."
The Swede improved his indoor semifinal record to a perfect 5-0. He successfully captured his two ATP titles during the European indoor circuit, in Milan in 2004 and in Metz last year. Following Saturday's win, Soderling has a 35-14 career mark indoors as compared to a 30-47 record outdoors.
Soderling defeated Andy Murray in Friday's quarterfinals and took out last year's finalists in the first two rounds, crushing runner-up Max Mirnyi 6-0, 6-1 in his Memphis opener and defending champion Kenneth Carlsen in the second round.
Vliegen was looking for to advance to his second career ATP final. He reached the title match in Adelaide three years ago, where he fell to Czech Domink Hrbaty in straight sets.
The Belgian has put together his strongest season start. He has made one of the biggest jumps in the Top 100 just two months into the year, moving up 30 spots to No. 65 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings after reaching the Chennai semifinals and Adelaide quarterfinals.
