Swede Robin Soderling fell at Andy Murray's hands in last week's San Jose quarterfinal and returned the favor Friday at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, ousting the Scottish teen 6-1, 6-4.
Murray dug himself into an early hole, giving up two breaks of serve and winning a total of 10 points in the first set. After being broken early in the second set, he knotted the score at 3-3 before Soderling promptly broke back.
The Swede earned triple match point on Murray's serve, but the tenacious teenager staved off elimination for another game. He saved five match points in his service game and another two with Soderling serving out the match, before the Swede successfully converted his eighth match point.
Soderling earned a semifinal berth for the first time this year, and his first since Milan over a year ago. He will face Kristof Vliegen, who became the first man to advance to the semifinals when he defeated Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to begin play Friday in Memphis.
The 23-year-old Vliegen only managed to break the Chilean once during the 2-hour, 11-minute match, but chose the perfect time to deliver. He went up 5-4 in the third set and successfuly served out the victory in the next game.
The Belgian defeated Americans James Blake, the No. 5 seed, and Paul Goldstein earlier this week, and will come up against the winner of the Andy Murray-Robin Soderling match in the semifinals.
Vliegen, who is ranked a career-high No. 65 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, will be playing in his second semifinal this year. He picked up his tenth victory of the season with Friday's win, already eclipsing his previous best mark of matches won - a total of nine in 2004.
