Amy Frazier and Jill Craybas prevailed in the all-American quarterfinal battles early Thursday at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis.
Frazier, the No. 7 seed, defeated compatriot Shenay Perry on Center Court to reach her first semifinal of 2006. The 33-year-old served for the match at 5-3 in the third set, but Perry broke back to push the match to the tie-break before Frazier successfully clinched her final four berth.
"I'm very happy to get through today and with how I played," said Frazier. "I got out to a good start in the breaker, but it can go either way."
The circuit veteran's semifinal opponent will be either 15-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki or Swede Sofia Arvidsson, who face off on Center Court Thursday night.
Meanwhile, eighth seed Craybas conceded just five games to Lilia Osterloh to secure her third career semifinal appearance and her first since Canberra in 2002.
Craybas will next face 20-year-old Marta Domachowska, the No. 6 seed, who took out fourth-seeded American Laura Granville 6-4, 6-4.
Said the 31-year-old Craybas about playing a youngster in her semifinal match: "A lot of people say the older you are the more experience you have, and that could very well be true, but a lot of the younger players coming up have played a couple years already, and they're fired up. They're just excited to be there and they're just going after it, so I think there's a little advantage to being young, too, and they probably have a little more energy than we do."
Domachowska, the only player from Poland in the Top 200, is making her debut appearance in Memphis this year.
In the final match of the day third seed Sofia Arvidsson defeated 15-year-old Danish prodigy Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first semifinal of the year.
