American Lisa Raymond's quest to win a third Cellular South Cup in Memphis ended Wednesday when she fell to third seed Sofia Arvidsson 6-4, 6-4. Raymond was back-to-back Memphis champion in 2002-2003.
But the news isn't all bad for American fans: Five U.S. players have reached the quarterfinals.
The Swede advanced to her first WTA quarterfinal of the year, where she will play 15-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who one day earlier defeated American Ashley Harkleroad.
Last month Arvidsson reached the third round of the Australian Open. But in the past two weeks she has suffered first-round losses to Elena Dementieva in Paris and to Eleni Danilidou in Antwerp qualifying.
American Amy Frazier claimed a bizarre victory over Russian Yaroslava Shvedova 1-6, 6-0, 6-0. Frazier lost the first 16 points of the match and 22 of the first 23 to go down 0-5. But after dropping the first set she won 12 straight games to reach the semifinals, where she will play fellow American Shenay Perry.
American Laura Granville clipped Ukraine's Tatiana Perebiynis 6-1, 6-2 and countrywoman Lilia Osterloh enjoyed a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win over 16-year-old Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, who in the first round upset top seed Nicola Vaidisova.
