Top seed Andy Roddick  withstood one match point, 33 aces and another third-set tie-break to defeat Wayne Arthurs in Memphis Wednesday night. Earlier, Andy Murray came within two points of defeat against Rainer Schuettler before eventually clawing back to beat the German 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the second round.

Roddick staved off one match point at 8-9 in the second-set tie-break after Arthurs served back-to-back aces after being down set point at 7-8.

Arthurs said the match would be his last for three months. He and partner Caroline are expecting their first baby in one month. The baby will be born in Melbourne.

There were no breaks of serve in the second and third sets. Roddick, who needed a third-set tie-break to defeat Mardy Fish in the first round, served 20 aces himself.

Murray, 18, who defeated Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt en route to his debut ATP title in San Jose last week, broke Schuettler when he served for the match at 5-4 in the second set.

Schuettler led 30-15 in that game but Murray fought back to hold a break point at 30-40 and then soon after converted his second break point to level at 5-5. The Scot soon after broke Schuettler for a second consecutive time to win the set and then ran away with the match in the third.

Schuettler was looking for his first tournament match win since the first week of the season when he reached the second round in Chennai. He had subsequently lost three first-round ATP-level matches and one Challenger-level first-round match. His last win came in a 'dead' Davis Cup rubber against Frenchman Arnaud Clement two weeks ago.

Second seed Nicolas Kiefer withdrew from the tournament Wednesday with a sinusitis. He has been replaced in the main draw by South African lucky loser Rik de Voest, who will now play Jonas Bjorkman last match on Grandstand Wednesday.

Former World No. 2 Tommy Haas advanced to the second round when qualifier Justin Gimelstob retired with a lower back injury when trailing 1-2 in the first set.
