Spanish third seed Tommy Robredo suffered a surprise first-round exit against Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville on Monday. Robredo, No. 14 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, has suffered four consecutive defeats since claiming his 200th career victory by beating James Blake in the third round of the Australian Open.
Capdeville was just 1-1 on the season at ATP level and had just four career ATP-level match wins before this week. His best result this year was at last month's Santiago Challenger, where he won the title.
"It is my best win because Robredo is ranked 14. Last year at the US Open I beat Mathieu, but this is different."
Eighth seeded Belgian Xavier Malisse had few problems reaching the second round, defeating German Bjorn Phau 6-1, 6-4. Malisse, who improved to 10-4 on the season, is one of just three players (Federer, Ljubicic) to reach two finals so far in 2006.
Defending champion Kenneth Carlsen moved safely into the second round with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Australian Peter Luczak, who came into the main draw as a lucky loser following the pre-tournament withdrawal of countryman Mark Philippoussis due to a back injury.
Carlsen reached the Adelaide quarterfinals in the first week of the year but has failed to move beyond the second round in four subsequent tournaments.
Carlsen, who is unseeded, will play the winner of seventh seed Max Mirnyi, whom he defeated in last year's final, and Swede Robin Soderling.
