Roddick, Zvonareva, Vaidisova Advance to the Quarterfinals


Andy Roddick posted his second consecutive win in as many days to advance to the quarterfinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. The No. 1 seed defeated Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-3 and is now 1-2 against the Frenchman. The No. 1 American served 12 aces while saving the only break point he faced to win the match in 1 hour, 15 minutes. Roddick will be back in action on Friday against the winner of Mardy Fish and Robby Ginepri.

Earlier in the day, No. 2 seed Tommy Haas broke serve three en route to his 6-4, 6-4 victory over American qualifier Jeff Salzenstein. The 26-year-old German broke serve three times and was very effective with his serve (7 aces) in his 1 hour, 13 minutes. He hopes for a strong second consecutive week after reaching the semifinals in San Jose.

In other matches, Wayne Arthurs defeated No. 7 seed Jurgen Melzer 7-6(5), 7-6(4) while Cyril Saulnier overcame American qualifier 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

On the women's side, No. 1 seed Vera Zvonareva advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6(0), 6-3 win over Severine Beltrame. Both players exchanged service breaks that lead to the tie-break, where the Russian played flawless tennis to win 7-0. She broke serve twice in the second set to close out the victory.

No. 7 Nicole Vaidisova soon followed with a strong 6-2, 6-2 win over Kristina Brandi while The 15-year-old sensation will now play American hope Jamea Jackson, who upset No. 2 seed Amy Frazier in the first round.

In other second round matches, Meghan Shaugnessy, Katerina Bodarenko, Evgenia Linetstaya, Yoon Jeaong Ch and Akiko Morigami also advanced to the quarterfinals.
