A total of 11 singles matches were played at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup on Thursday.
Day 4 at the Racquet club of Memphis started with an exciting teenager showdown between Czech sensation Nicole Vaidisova and American Jamea Jackson. The 15-year-old and No. 7 seed Vaidisova broke Jackson's serve four times and used every inch of her 6-2 height to hit nine aces to overcome the 18-year-old American 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4.
No. 3 seed Meghan Shaugnessy had a much easier route to the semifinal with a 6-1, 6-2 convincing victory over Yoon Jeung Cho to tie the series at 1-1. Evgenia Linetskaya also posted a straight-set victory over Akiko Morigami 6-2, 6-2.
On the men's side Robby Ginepri was the first one to advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday by defeating No. 6 seed Mardy Fish 7-5, 6-1. In spite of the 14 aces hit by Fish, Ginepri was able to break serve three times while never facing a break point on his serve.
Jan Michael Gambill and Frenchman Anthony Dupuis also advanced. Gambill won a hard fought 7-6(2), 7-6(3) match over Iraki Labadze. The 27-year-old American was able to hold serve consistently throughout the match and had plenty of opportunities to break (13), from which he converted one in the second set. With the win, Gambill matches last year's result in Memphis.
Dupuis advanced after winning the first set and being up 2-0 against Vince Spadea when the American pulled out due to a right shoulder injury. Other second round winners were Kenneth Carlsen and Xavier Malisse and Max Mirnyi, who all won in straight sets.
In doubles quarterfinal action, in an All-American battle, No. 1 seed Mike and Bob Bryan overcame a 1-0 set deficit against Gambill and Ginepri to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.THE PLACE TO BE…..
