The men's semifinals and women's final are set for the 2005 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup in Memphis.
The first semifinal will feature second seed Tommy Haas of Germany against eighth seed Max Mirnyi from Belarus. In the second semifinal, American top seed Andy Roddick will take on unseeded Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark. Haas has won all seven of his previous meetings with Mirnyi, the last of which came last week in San Jose. Haas won that quarterfinal match 6-7(2) 7-6(3) 6-2. That was the first meeting between the two since 2002.
Haas is in the semifinals for the second week in a row. Last week at the SAP Open in San Jose he defeated Mirnyi in the quarterfinals before falling to Roddick in the semifinals 6-7(3) 3-6. This is only Haas' third event of 2005. This week Haas has been broken just once, in the first set of his opening round match against Jeff Salzenstein. The three break points Haas faced in that match are the only ones he's seen all week.
Haas is attempting to reach his 17 th career ATP final. He has won seven career titles, the first of which came here in Memphis in 1999. Last year Haas reached two finals, winning the title in Houston and Los Angeles. This is Haas' seventh appearance in Memphis, and it will be his fourth semifinal here. He won the title the only time he reached the final ? 1999. That was the first career title for the German. Mirnyi is in his third semifinal of 2005. In both his previous semifinals, he lost to the eventual champion ? Lleyton Hewitt in Sydney and Robin Soderling in Milan.
This is just the second appearance for Mirnyi in Memphis. He now owns a 3-1 record all-time here. In three matches this week, Mirnyi has fired 63 aces. For the year he's hit 221 aces, an average of 14.7 per match.
This week Mirnyi has played five tie-breaks, winning four, including three by a score of 7-1. For the year, Mirnyi is 11-3 in tie-breaks. Mirnyi has had tremendous success on indoor courts. For his career, he is 71-47 (.602 winning percentage) on indoor courts, and 113-117 (.491) on outdoor courts. A win would put Mirnyi in just his third career ATP final. It would be his first since he won his only career title at Rotterdam in 2003. Both of Mirnyi's previous finals appearances have come indoors.
Mirnyi is also in the doubles semifinal here, also his third of the year. His other doubles semifinals came in Sydney (w/ Melzer) and at the Australian Open (w/ Bjorkman). Roddick picked up a straight sets win over Carlsen in their only previous meeting, which came on clay in Houston last Spring.
Roddick is looking to reach consecutive finals for the first time since July when he won the title in Indianapolis (d Kiefer) and was a finalist at the ATP Masters Series event in Toronto (l. to Federer). Twice in his career has Roddick won titles in consecutive weeks. In 2001, he claimed the titles in Atlanta (d Malisse) and Houston (d Lee). On his way to finishing as year-end No. 1 in 2003, Roddick won ATP Masters Series titles in Montreal (d Nalbandian) and Cincinnati (d. Fish) in back-to-back weeks.
Roddick has won 16 career titles in 24 finals appearances. This is the fifth appearance for Roddick in Memphis, and he is 15-3 all-time here. He won the title here in 2002 (d Blake) and reached the final here in 2003 (l to Dent).
Carlsen is in the 16 th semifinal of his career, and his first since Shanghai last September (l. to Burgsmuller). His semifinal appearance in Shanghai was his first since winning the Tokyo title in 2002. In semifinal matches, Carlsen is 6-9. In his six career finals, he's won two titles, in Hong Kong in 1998 and Tokyo in 2002.
This is the fifth appearance for Carlsen in Memphis. He is 7-4 all-time here, and has won three matches in one year for the first time in Memphis. He debuted here in 1994. Carlsen is 4-37 all-time against Top 10 players, and has lost nine straight against the Top 10, including a straight sets defeat last week to No. 10 Andre Agassi in the SAP Open San Jose. Carlsen's last win against a player in the Top 10 came in 2002 on the grass at Halle where he downed Thomas Johansson 4-6 6-3 6-3.
