Chile’s #1 player, Fernando Gonzalez, just completed his best season ever with a career-high three ATP titles on three different surfaces and a #13 world ranking. In fact, he was the only player on the circuit to finish in the Top 25 in both singles AND doubles, and advanced to the third round or better in ALL FOUR Grand Slam tournaments! This will be his Memphis debut and it’ll be easy to show him lots of Southern hospitality!
Spaniard Tommy Robredo finished in the Top 20 for his second straight year, winning a career-best 44 matches, once again reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. A thrilling player to watch, he could be nicknamed “Tiebreak-Tommy”, with a 5-1 record in matches decided in a third set tie-break.
Last year’s Memphis finalist Max Mirnyi compiled another outstanding season by finishing among the Top 50 in singles and Top 15 in doubles for the sixth straight year! Nicknamed “The Beast” due to his dominant presence and fearless play, he won 5 of his 8 doubles finals, and won 35 total matches, which is the second-most in a single year.
Last but never least, Memphis favorite Tommy Haas also returns! The #2 German (behind Nicolas Kiefer) and 2000 Memphis champion finished in the Top 50 for the eighth time in nine years, despite being plagued over time by two broken ankles and rotator cuff surgeries. Displaying a penchant for golf, water-skiing, and fast cars, he also demonstrated his singing ability here at The Racquet Club Pub!
