MEMPHIS (January 7) - The Kroger St. Jude Tennis Championships,
in conjunction with the Kroger Delta Marketing Area, has announced
that Cellular South has joined the event as a title sponsor
of the women's portion of the "combined" event.
The winner of the women's singles championship will be awarded
the Cellular South Cup.
The tournament will now be known as the Kroger St. Jude and
the Cellular South Cup, presented by Keebler, Pepsi and Conair,
and is scheduled for Feb. 14-23 at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
The event has been a stop of the men's professional tour since
1975, and in 2001, tournament owner Mac Winker purchased the
franchise rights to a WTA (women's tour) event that had been
held in Oklahoma City since 1990. With the welcome addition
of the women, this tournament is now one of a select few in
the world to host a professional men's and women's combined
event.
For 28 years, this tournament has brought the sport's brightest
stars and best fans to the Bluff City, and this year is no
exception.
