Sargsian: "I was lucky."
Sargsian Ends Bjorkman's Hopes
Armenia's Sargis Sargsian saved one match point in a third set tie-break to defeat Jonas Bjorkman 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(8) to reach the quarterfinals in Memphis.
With the support of his 99-year-old grandfather behind him, Sargsian fought off a number of break points in the final set before coming through in 2 hours, 22 minutes against the man who had knocked out defending champion Mark Philippoussis in the first round.
"I have no idea how I won that match," admitted Sargsian. "Jonas had break points and missed what was an easy volley for him. I was lucky in the end."
His grandfather, Minas Mansourian, who turns 100 next month and lives in New Jersey, was a tennis champion in Iran back in his day. "He's a good luck charm for me," said Sargsian. "He came to Newport in 1997 and told me before the tournament that I would win and I did."
Sargsian now goes on to meet Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals, and likes the way things are going for him in Memphis. "I love the courts here, I like the atmosphere and it's a tournament I always seem to play well in," said Sargsian. "Roddick is an incredible young player, and it's going to be tough to beat him."
