Memphis, TN -- No. 4 seed Lindsay Davenport cruised into the quarterfinals of the Cellular South Cup with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in 51 minutes over Russian Evgeniya Rodina. The 31-year-old former World No. 1 went to 9-2 on the year and she will face No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.
Davenport, who opened the season with her 54th career singles title in Auckland, dominated from the start, breaking twice in the 20-minute first set and hitting six of her 11 aces. Davenport converted all five of her break points while saving five on her serve.
"I felt good out there and it was nice to play during the day," said Davenport. "Indoors is probably my favorite conditions to play in and the court is playing relatively fast which is good for me."
No. 3 seed Shahar Peer of Israel came back from an 0-2 third set deficit to win the last six games and advance to the quarterfinals of the Cellular South Cup with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Melinda Czink of Hungary on Wednesday.
Peer, who reached last year's final and is the highest seed remaining in the field, improved her match record to 11-5 on the season by advancing to her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal or better. She opened the campaign with a semifinal at Gold Coast last month.
Peer converted all seven break points in the one hour and 39 minute match while saving three of seven on her serve.
"I played a very, very good first set and then she was attacking and dictating play in the second set," said Peer, who will take on No. 7 and 2006 champion Sofia Arvidsson in the quarterfinals. "In the third set I played better and I was really aggressive. I was able to dictate and control the points."
Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over 15-year-old Michelle Larcherde Brito of Portugal and 19-year-old qualifier Marina Erakovic of New Zealand advanced to the quarters with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over American wild card Amber Liu.
The 17-year-old Wozniacki improved her match record to 8-2 on the season with her second straight quarterfinal. Last week in Doha, she lost in the quarters to eventual champ Maria Sharapova.
