Memphis, TN -- No. 3 seed and last year's finalist Shahar Peer came back to defeat No. 7 and 2006 Memphis champion Sofia Arvidsson 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in Thursday's quarterfinal action at the Cellular South Cup.
Peer, who saved four break points serving for the match at 5-3, won her 200th career match (200-87) and improved to 12-5 on the season. This is the 20-year-old Israeli's second WTA Tour semifinal of the year after opening the campaign with a final four effort at Gold Coast in Australia.
Peer converted six of 14 break points while saving nine of 13 break points on her serve in the one hour and 53 minute match. Arvidsson only won 48% of first serve points compared to Peer's 63%
"It was a really, really tough match and I was able to pull it out at 5-3," said Peer. "I kept fighting and fighting to the end. We both played very good in the third set."
No. 4 seed Lindsay Davenport, playing in her first U.S. tournament since the 2006 US Open, needed only 53 minutes to dismiss No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-0, 6-2, to reach the semifinals. Davenport converted five of seven break points and never faced a break point on her serve.
"I'm playing pretty well this week and I like playing indoors," said Davenport. "Hopefully I can keep it going two more matches and play here Saturday night (in the final). I felt like I was in control most of the points."
The 31-year-old American improved her season match record to 10-2 and she will attempt to reach her second final of the season. She won Auckland in January, defeating Rezai in the final.
The 18th-ranked Peer will face No. 5 seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus in the semifinals. The 19-year-old Govortsova advanced to her second career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour semifinal as she defeated wild card Julia Goerges 7-6(5), 6-2 in one hour and 28 minutes. She also evened her match record at 5-5 on the season.
Govortsova broke Goerges in the second game of the match and served for the set at 5-3 but was broken. Both players held the rest of the way, forcing a tie-break. Govortsova trailed 1-2 in the tie-break but then won six of the last nine points to win the set. In the second set, Goerges was broken in the fifth and seventh games.
Govortsova converted three of 13 break points while saving three of four on her serve.
Qualifier Marina Erakovic advanced to her second career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour semifinal with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. The 19-year-old from New Zealand broke in the sixth game of the final set and held on for the victory.
Erakovic hit nine aces in the one hour and 47 minute match and converted six of 12 break points. Kudryavtseva was four of seven on break point chances.
