Bjorkman Edges Querrey

Memphis, TN -- Jonas Bjorkman, playing in his first ATP tournament of the season, outlasted No. 5 seed Sam Querrey 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4), to advance to the quarterfinals.

The 35-year-old Swede, who missed the month of January due to the birth of his second child, daughter, Bianca, survived 26 aces by the 20-year-old American. The only breaks of serve came in the third game of the first set when Bjorkman went up 2-1 and in the 10th game of the second set when the Swede was broken at 15-40.

"I felt good the whole match and he hit a lot of bombs," said Bjorkman. "It would be nice to borrow his serve for a week. You have to be on your toes a lot. I have to try to be aggressive and not let him dictate the point."

Top seed and 2002 Memphis champion Andy Roddick extended his winning streak to seven consecutive matches with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over long-time friend Mardy Fish on Thursday night. It was Roddick's seventh straight win over Fish on the ATP circuit.

"The courts were a little bit slower than last week in San Jose and Mardy didn't serve that well," said Roddick, who only lost seven points in nine service games and fired 14 aces. "Physically I am feeling great and the next match (against Soderling) is going to be huge. He reached the final last week in Rotterdam and he's cruised through the first two rounds here."

Roddick had a 77% first serve mark compared to Fish's 42% and converted all three break points while saving two on his serve in the second game of the second set. Roddick broke in the fifth game of the opening set and came up with two breaks in the first and third games of the second set to seal the victory. Roddick didn't lose a point in his final three service games.

Big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione fired 15 aces and never lost a point on his first serve en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 6 seed Thomas Johansson.

The 22-year-old left-hander never faced a break point in the 56 minute match and won all 26 points on his first serve. In fact, Guccione only lost seven points on his second serve in 10 service games. He broke Johansson in the fourth game of the opening set and in the ninth game of the second set to secure his third career ATP quarterfinal (or better), the first away from his native Australia.

No. 8 seed and 2006 finalist Robin Soderling advanced to his third straight ATP quarterfinal as he ousted Victor Hanescu 6-2, 6-1 in 44 minutes. The 23-year-old Swede only lost five points in seven service games and broke the Romanian five times en route to his eighth victory in 10 matches this season.

Soderling, who is coming back from a left wrist injury that he suffered last August, reached the quarterfinals in Marseille and the final in Rotterdam the last two weeks.

"I played two very good matches so far and I probably played my best match ever two years ago in the first round against Mirnyi (winning 6-0, 6-1)," said Soderling "I like to play here. It's a nice tennis club and it's not very often you play in a tennis club. Normally you play in a convention center or big stadium and it's so different."

American teenager Donald Young advanced to his first career ATP quarterfinal with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Colombian Alejandro Falla.

The 18-year-old left-hander fought off five break points at 3-3 in the final set, then broke Falla before serving out the match. Young saved 10 of 14 break points, including seven of eight in the third set, while converting five of 12 break chances in the one hour and 35 minute match.

In the third set, Young went up 2-0 but was broken back. Both players held serve thoughout until the eighth game when Young broke at 15-40.
