Davenport Avenges Earlier Loss to German Teenager

Memphis, TN -- No. 4 seed and former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport made a successful Memphis debut Monday night with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over teenage German qualifier Sabine Lisicki in the first round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & Cellular South Cup.

The 31-year-old American avenged an earlier loss to the 18-year-old in Fed Cup three weeks ago in La Jolla, Calif.

On Monday, Davenport hit 10 aces, including three in a row in her first service game. She converted five of seven break points while saving two of four break points on her serve. She also took advantage of Lisicki's seven double faults, five coming in the second set.

Davenport broke in the third game of the opening set but lost serve in the sixth game. She then broke again in the 11th game after Lisicki led 40-0. Davenport then served it out with three aces to close out the 42-minute set.

"I lost my momentum in the first set after I went up an early break but I hung in there at five-all and was able to get a break after she was up 40-love," said Davenport, who then came up with three successive breaks in the second set to close out the match.

In other action, Evgeniya Rodina defeated Anastasiya Yakimova 7-5, 6-4 and 15-year-old Michelle Larcherde Brito, the youngest player in the field, advanced to the second round when Stephanie Cohen-Aloro of France retired due to a viral illness trailing 7-5, 1-0. Canadian Stephanie Dubois eliminated Vania King 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, and Julia Goerges of Germany beat American Lilia Osterloh 7-6(3), 7-6(3).

One other seed in action on Monday reached the second round. No. 5 Olga Govortsova of Belarus beat American Mashona Washington 6-4, 6-2.

Former Top 10 Brenda Schultz-Mccarthy, who qualified into the main draw, lost to Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
