Haas, Melzer Advance to 2nd RD on Opening Day

Memphis, TN -- No. 3 seed and two-time defending champion Tommy Haas extended his winning streak to 11 consecutive matches in Memphis as he avenged an earlier loss to Diego Hartfield with a 6-3, 6-2 win on Monday night in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

The 29-year-old German, who won last year's tournament without facing a break point in 47 games, was broken twice in the one hour, 14-minute match. He converted five of 10 break points and saved three of five break points on his serve.

Earlier this month, Haas lost to Hartfield in three sets in the first round of Delray Beach, Fla. in his return back from right shoulder surgery last November.

"I am pretty pleased with the way I played and just taking it step-by-step," said Haas, who is appearing in his third tournament of the season. "The shoulder is holding up and I am just happy to be playing out there."

The other seed to advance was No. 7 Jurgen Melzer who rallied to defeat American wild card John Isner 6-7(8), 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour, 59 minutes.

Melzer fired 19 aces, including one at match point down at 5-6 in the third set. Isner, who was coming off a quarterfinal showing in San Jose last week, lost for the second week in a row after holding match point.

"Yeah, I should have won that match," said Isner of his loss to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez last week. "I had five or six match points. And another match point today - it's pretty frustrating, but what are you going to do?"

"I expected a very tough match playing him and it was," said Melzer, who advanced to the second round for the third time in four visits to Memphis. "I was serving well the whole match and it's good to come back to win after saving match point. Last week I had a match point and lost."

Isner, who hit 18 aces in a losing effort, was broken for the only time in the eighth game of the second set as he double-faulted three straight points. Melzer then served out the second set.

In other matches, Aussie Chris Guccione saved all seven break points he faced in a 7-6(6), 7-6(5) victory over American Robert Kendrick

The big-serving left-hander fired 17 aces and Kendrick won four more points than Guccione (88 to 84) in the one hour and 31 minute match. The 22-year-old Aussie saved the seven break points in the opening set. Kendrick hit 13 aces and never faced a break point in the match.

Guccione, who improved to 7-4 on the season, will face the winner of No. 6 seed Thomas Johansson and Marat Safin in the second round.

Frenchman Florent Serra needed only 48 minutes to defeat Brazilian Marcos Daniel 6-1, 6-2. Serra converted four of seven break points while never facing a break point.

Swede Jonas Bjorkman, at 35 the oldest player in the field, had little trouble in defeating Chilean Paul Capdeville 6-3, 6-1, and Colombian No. 1 Alejandro Falla beat Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-2.
