Cellular South Cup Makes Second Major Player Announcement

Memphis, TN – The Cellular South Cup announces that Lindsay Davenport, former World No. 1, will play in the 2008 tournament. Davenport won six Grand Slam singles and doubles titles. She also won an Olympic Gold Medal in singles in 1996.

Lindsay Davenport was ranked as the No. 1 women singles and doubles player several times between 1998 and 2001, and was the year-end No. 1 player in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2005.

She was absent from the Sony Ericsson WTA tour for a few months in the latter part of 2006 due to a back injury, and the birth of her first child, but in July of this year, announced that she would return and begin her comeback. Since July, Lindsay Davenport has won two singles titles – Bali and Quebec City, Canada, and also reached the semifinals in Beijing. The win in Quebec City was her 53rd career singles title and lifted her to No. 73 in the tour rankings.

Mac Winker, Tournament Owner, proudly stated that “the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup are very fortunate to have one of the all-time greats in women’s tennis play in Memphis in 2008.”

Lindsay Davenport joins defending champion Venus Williams as the two stars (20 Slams wins between them) to headline the women’s tennis event.
