Memphis, TN – The two top Americans of Andy Roddick and James Blake are the No. 1 and 2 seeds in this year's Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & Cellular South Cup while defending two-time champion Tommy Haas is the No. 3 seed.
Roddick, a wild card entry and the 2002 champion, plays a qualifier in the first round while Blake, a finalist in Memphis in 2000, takes on the youngest player in the Top 100 South African Airways ATP Rankings, 18-year-old Donald Young.
Haas, the No. 1 German player and a three-time Memphis champion, looks to avenge a first round loss to Argentine Diego Hartfield in Delray Beach earlier this month. The 29-year-old owns a 26-6 career record in Memphis, reaching the semifinals or better six times. Last year he won the title (d. Roddick) without facing a break point in five matches.
One of the most intriguing first round match-ups is wild card Marat Safin against No. 6 seed Thomas Johansson. Safin leads the career series 3-2 but one of the Swede's wins came in the 2002 Australian Open final. They last played in the 2002 Davis Cup quarterfinals in Moscow on clay and the Russian prevailed in straight sets.
Roddick is one of three seeds to face a qualifier in the first round. The others are No. 4 Radek Stepanek and No. 8 Robin Soderling, who reached the final here two years ago. Stepanek and Sodering won their semifinal matches Saturday to advance to finals in San Jose and Rotterdam, respectively. Roddick was playing his semifinal Saturday night in San Jose. All three are in the top half of the draw along with Johansson-Safin.
In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 Blake plays up-and-coming American Donald Young, No. 3 Haas takes on Argentine Diego Hartfield for the second time in three weeks, No. 7 Jurgen Melzer battles 6'9" big-serving American John Isner, a wild card entry, and No. 5 Sam Querrey meets countryman Michael Russell.
The oldest player in the field is 35-year-old Jonas Bjorkman who reached the semifinals in Memphis 11 years ago when he ranked a career-high No. 4 during that season. Bjorkman is also playing doubles with veteran Kevin Ullyett and they are the No. 2 seeds.
